Publication and Contract Review Grants Types of Grants TAA offers two forms of grants to assist U.S. authors with some of the expenses related to publishing their academic works and textbooks: Publication Grants and Textbook or Academic Contract Review Grants. Both are open to members and non-members. Publication Grants provide reimbursement for eligible expenses directly related to bringing an academic book, textbook, or journal article to publication.Textbook or Academic Contract Review Grants reimburse eligible expenses for legal review when you have a contract offer for a textbook or academic monograph or other scholarly work that includes royalty arrangements. Award Value Maximum eligibility for any grant is determined on the following schedule: Non-members, honorary or complimentary members, guests, temporary or trial members - $300For members in their first year of membership in TAA on the date of application - $500For members in their second or higher year of membership on the date of application - $1,000

Guidelines:Grants are open to TAA members and non-members. Authors must be U.S. citizens with a U.S. mailing address. Only one grant per publication. At least one author of the work must be a TAA member to receive a member-level grant.Works must be peer-reviewed by independent, third-party reviewers through a process established and managed by the publisher.For Publication Grants, author must provide proof of intent to publish from the publisher.For Contract Review Grants, author must provide proof of contract offer.Eligible publications:Publication Grants: Journal articles, monographs, textbooks and other academic or educational materials that have been published within a year of publication date or expected to be published within a year of application dateContract Review Grants:Monographs, textbooks and other academic or educational works that are expected to be publishing within two years of the application date.Publication must have a firm offer without a signed agreement or completed publication at time of application.Eligible expenses:TAA Grants are only provided to reimburse for actual costs incurred for eligible expenses, up to the maximum eligibility. Applicant must first seek reimbursement from publisher and institution.Publication Grants:These grants reimburse only those expenses necessary to the publication of the work (not to the initial research and writing of the work).Eligible expenses include:Permissions for use of images, etc., owned by 3rd parties, that are necessary to illuminate substantive points of the text;Indexing or copyediting expenses; andPublisher fees such as subventions, page charges, author fees, etc., provided the fees are deemed legitimate in TAA’s sole discretion.Contract Review Grants:These grants reimburse only those expenses related to having an attorney review a contract offer from a publisher and provide the author with advice prior to signing.

Ineligibility

Self-published works are not eligible for grants from TAA.Publication cannot be contingent on a TAA grant.Publication Grants: Ineligible expenses: Interlibrary Loan costs, or other incidental costs of conducting research in preparation for developing the work. Travel costs. Equipment or supplies, such as lab materials, needed for the research or preparation of the work.
