The fabricated statistic that almost cost us everything

I need to tell you about the worst near-miss I've ever witnessed in grant writing.

A grants manager at a mid-size youth development nonprofit was racing to finish a federal proposal. Tight deadline, skeleton crew, the usual.   3. Check for invented programs or partnerships. Read every program name, partner organization, and service description in the draft. Does this program actually exist? Do you actually have this partnership? Is this service description accurate, or has the AI embellished it into something your organization aspires to but hasn't built yet? This is the check most people skip, because program names and partnership descriptions feel familiar enough to glide past.
  4. Verify budget figures match your actuals. Take every number from the narrative that implies cost — staff counts, service volumes, timelines, geographic reach — and check it against your budget. If the narrative says you'll serve 500 youth and your budget only funds capacity for 300, that's a credibility bomb waiting for a careful reviewer.
  5. Read the full draft as a funder would. After the detail checks, read the entire proposal once more — but this time, read it as a skeptic.
