Ladd / Moran Memorial Scholarship

Award Amount: $2,500 (non-renewable)

Geographic Scope: Greater Hartford area only (Connecticut)

Overview:
A $2,500 scholarship awarded annually to a graduating high school student who has demonstrated commitment to their community through volunteer service to the special needs or disability community.

The scholarship honors the Ladd and Moran families, who exemplify commitment to serving children with disabilities:

  • Peter Ladd (2001-2012): Born with cerebral palsy, enjoyed horseback riding and Miracle League baseball. Attended Norfeldt Elementary School in West Hartford. Died unexpectedly at age 11.

  • Johnny Moran (2007-2016): Born with Wieacker Wolff Syndrome, was a teammate on the Miracle League baseball field. Passed away at age 9.

    • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a graduating high school student

  • Must live in or attend an accredited high school in the defined Greater Hartford area

  • Must be enrolled or accepted at an accredited 2 or 4 year college

  • Must plan to be enrolled full-time in the fall semester

  • Immediate and extended family members of the Miracle League of CT Board of Directors, Advisory Board, other affiliated boards, or the Ladd and Moran families are not eligible

    • Scholarship Evaluation Criteria:

  • Commitment to community through volunteer service to organizations serving children/adults with intellectual, developmental or physical disabilities – 40%

  • Essay question response – 40%

  • Letter of recommendation – 10%

  • Academic record – 10%

    Application Process

    Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by May 15, 2026 (deadline was extended from original May 15, 2024 in past)

    Required Materials:
    1. Completed scholarship application (fillable PDF available)
    2. Official sealed high school transcript
    3. One letter of recommendation from a leader, organizer, or Executive Director of an organization where applicant volunteers
    4. Essay response (no more than 300 words) answering the provided prompt question
