Judicial Education Scholarships

Program Overview:
CJI provides funding for the continuing education of Colorado's judges as one of its key programs, in the belief that a well-educated judiciary helps promote excellence in Colorado's courts.

Funding Source:
Funding is supported in part by The Larry DeMuth Endowment for Judicial Education, which was created by longtime CJI board member and philanthropist Larry DeMuth. Over the years, CJI has awarded more than $500,000 in funding to Colorado judges and court staff.

Geographic Scope:

  • Colorado only

  • All 22 judicial districts
  • Eligible Applicants:

  • Colorado district court judges

  • County court judges

  • Magistrates

  • Judicial staff

  • Employees of the State Court Administrator's Office

  • Other Colorado Judicial Department employees
  • Acceptable Funding Requests:

  • Registration/conference fees for classes and seminars through established institutions or training facilities

  • Hardware, software, textbooks, CDs, or DVDs of conference materials

  • Speaker fees (speakers should be recognized specialists)

  • Support of conferences, seminars and training to benefit the Colorado Judicial Department
  • What CJI Does NOT Fund:

  • Travel (airfare, mileage, ground transfers, cab fare) - unless approved by SCAO's Education Director

  • Lodging accommodations

  • Food, drink, meeting room charges or entertainment outside the conference or registration fee

  • Parking (overnight or valet)

  • More than one individual from the same judicial district attending the same training at the same time (unless approved by SCAO's Education Director)

  • Travel outside the continental United States (unless approved by SCAO's Education Director)
  • Funding Frequency Restrictions:

  • Individuals requesting funding scholarships are eligible to receive funds only once in any 12-month period

  • The frequency in which an individual has received funding may be a consideration
  • Application Review Schedule:
    Scholarship requests are accepted year-round. The Judicial Education Fund Committee reviews scholarships during the first full two weeks of each quarter:

  • Q1: January 4-17

  • Q2: April 5-18

  • Q3: July 5-18

  • Q4: October 4-17

  • Applications must be submitted at least six weeks in advance of the event

  • All funding requests must come from the Colorado Judicial Branch

  • CJI works closely with the Colorado State Court Administrator's Education Director

  • CJI has discretion to make exceptions to these guidelines

    - Other travel expense funding sources
