CHATS equine therapy involves specific movements on horseback which activate the learning receptors of the brain and create physical, mental, and emotional states that allow the release of oxytocin which serves to relax, calm, and reduce interfering behaviors. This can lead to fewer behavioral meltdowns and increased engagement in learning activities, social interaction, and communication. The proposed projects include training a new horse and offers therapy play dates to autistic children with families that do not have the financial means to provide this alternative to traditional therapy. | $29,800 |
| Colonial CASA Williamsburg, VA | Provides advocates that ensure abused and neglected children, along with their parents, are offered and receive timely services that support psychological growth, physical health, mental well-being, education, and safety while under the court's care. Advocates monitor the case throughout the judicial process to ensure the voices of these children are considered in the court's placement decisions. An Advocate typically has one or two cases at a time allowing them to devote time for meeting and interviewing all parties involved in a child's case. Colonial CASA's Youth Mentoring program trains volunteers to help youth aged 10 to 18 develop skills for successful transitions to adulthood. The organization then provides education, counseling, and practical experience so that NHI mothers improve their physical, emotional, and social well-being, develop or enhance skills that promote personal and financial independence, and secure permanent housing which leads to a lifework plan for self-sufficiency. This grant aims to provide an iCAFE Learning Lab to provide the students with individualized on-line modules in math, reading, and writing. | York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office Community Fund Yorktown, VA | The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office "Shop with the Sheriff" Program began in December 2001. The program strives to serve those children in the York County and the City of Poquoson who, through extenuating circumstances, may not receive any gifts during the holiday season. York-Poquoson Sheriff Deputy Officers and Elementary School Guidance Counselors are asked to submit potential participants and approximately 100 students are chosen each year. The event is usually held at a local store, and children are teamed up with a deputy to assist with their shopping. Santa Claus makes an appearance and refreshments are served. It is hoped to foster a positive experience with law enforcement personnel for these children. | $30,000 |
