The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta (commonly known as the Order of Malta or Knights of Malta) is a Catholic lay religious order with a traditional military and chivalric nature. Though it possesses no national territory, the order is considered a sovereign entity under international law. Founded approximately 970 years ago in Jerusalem, the order maintains its government headquarters in Rome, Italy, where it has been located since 1834 and is guaranteed extraterritorial rights.
