His military service included World War II and the Berlin Recall in the Southwest Pacific, where he commanded PC 1138 and attained the rank of captain in the Navy and rear admiral in the New York Militia. Prior to retirement, Schumann's career spanned the textile industry and international gourmet food importing, with employment at companies including Lane Cotton Mills, Springs Mills, and the Milliken Company.
