Mission & Focus Areas
Mission: The National Low Income Housing Coalition is dedicated to achieving racially and socially equitable public policy that ensures people with the lowest incomes have quality homes that are accessible and affordable in communities of their choice.
Primary Focus Areas:
- Preserving existing federally assisted homes and housing resources
- Expanding the supply of low-income housing
- Establishing housing stability as the primary purpose of federal low-income housing policy
- Serving extremely low-income (ELI) households—those with incomes at 30% of area median income or less—the only population in the U.S. experiencing an absolute shortage of affordable housing
Program Areas:
- State and Local Innovation (SLI) Project: Launched in April 2024, supporting state and local partners in advancing tenant protections, sustaining emergency rental assistance programs, preventing criminalization of homelessness, and promoting housing stability
- End Rental Arrears to Stop Evictions (ERASE) Project: Concluded in December 2023, successfully ensuring that $39.9 billion in emergency rental assistance was issued to over 11 million households, two-thirds of which were extremely low-income households
Organizational Structure: NLIHC's staff teams include research, policy, field, communications, and administration teams working together to achieve advocacy goals.
