Founders: Mamoru and Aiko Takitani, entrepreneurs who founded Hawaiian Host

Mamoru Takitani (1912–1988): Born July 21, 1912 in Yamaguchi, Japan. Came to Hawaii in his youth and settled on Maui. Married Aiko Uno in 1936 in Wailuku, Maui. Founded Hawaiian Host – Ellen Dye Candies on January 1, 1960, starting with candy sales from his station wagon. Expanded the business to include retail, restaurant operations, papaya farming, and international expansion to Los Angeles, Brazil, and Japan. Created the signature Hawaiian Host product combining European chocolate with Australian macadamia nuts.

Aiko Takitani (1906–2006): Co-founder of the foundation. The couple had no children and chose to establish the foundation to invest in bright young minds and give back to the community that supported their business success.

The foundation was established in 1993 by Mamoru and Aiko Takitani to thank the people of Hawaii for their support of Hawaiian Host products.
