Mission & Focus Areas

The foundation's mission and funding priorities have evolved significantly over its history. In its first 12 years, the foundation principally supported innovative work toward international peace and disarmament, civil rights, and efforts against racism. Early grants included support for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s trip to India to study Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent activism, as well as grants to the Highlander Research and Education Center and the Students National Coordinating Committee's civil rights work.

As geopolitical circumstances changed, the foundation expanded its focus to support early work relating to U.S. engagement with the People's Republic of China, and subsequently supported organizations addressing the costs of the U.S. war in Indochina to the people of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Following the war, the foundation focused on on-the-ground needs in health, agriculture, and education, as well as work exploring U.S. foreign policy toward the region.

Since 1995, following U.S. normalization of diplomatic relations with Vietnam, the foundation has been steadily increasing its support of work focusing on U.S. relations with Cuba, examining U.S. policy and the U.S. presence in Iraq, and exploring possible policy options. The foundation has supported work to strengthen contacts and understanding between citizens and institutions in the U.S. and Cuba.

The foundation is currently considering work relating to climate justice, climate resilience and adaptation, and ecosystem health and integrity in the face of unraveling global systems, including local and bioregional climate justice and ecosystem resilience efforts.
