Fred B. Wilson was born in Huntington, West Virginia. He began his career as a salesman for a men's clothing company before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, where he owned his own men's clothing store. He later worked as assistant to the President of Georgia Power Company, where he was instrumental in implementing appliance sales bundled with monthly electric bills. Wilson subsequently focused on real estate development, owning and developing shopping centers, apartment complexes, and hotels. He also owned a 1,900-acre Angus farm in Fulton County, Georgia. Wilson and his wife were devout members of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Atlanta. They had no children. Upon his death in 1960, a portion of his assets were transferred to the foundation; the remainder was transferred upon his wife's death in 1967.
