If you’ve used ChatGPT or Claude to look up a funder, brainstorm prospect lists, or research a foundation’s giving history, you already know AI can be useful for research. These tools are powerful and getting better fast. So the question isn’t whether AI helps with prospecting — it’s whether a general-purpose AI can go deep enough for the work that actually determines which funders you pursue.

What General-Purpose AI Does Well

Let’s be honest about what ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can do today. It’s a lot:

Quick summaries

Ask about a foundation and get a solid overview of their focus areas, giving patterns, and priorities. These tools can search the web, pull current information, and synthesize it quickly.

Brainstorming lists

'Give me 20 foundations that fund affordable housing in the Southeast' returns a useful starting point. With web search, the results are generally real organizations.

Explaining concepts

Unsure what a 990 PF tells you? How to read a funder's annual report? What an LOI should contain? General AI explains these clearly and well.

One-off research

Need to know a specific funder's deadline, or whether a foundation accepts unsolicited proposals? These are the kind of one-off questions AI handles well — like asking for a recipe or a unit conversion.

For the kind of quick, one-off questions people tend to ask AI these days, general-purpose tools work well. They’re great at breadth.

Where Breadth Isn’t Enough

The problems start when you need depth — the kind of sustained, multidimensional research that turns a list of names into a qualified prospect pipeline.

Superficial search depth. Ask ChatGPT to find funders for your organization and you’ll get a reasonable list. But the search is broad and cursory — it’s scanning the surface of the web the same way it would for any research question. The gap between the two is the difference between a list of names and a qualified pipeline.
